Acting as a role model to your children can be an exceptionally effective parenting tool and it should not be taken for granted.
So, what behavior can you model to your children?
1) How to handle negative emotion
Does your child throw tantrums out of frustration? How about you? Could it be that you model the same behaviour when you are frustrated? Negative emotions are beneficial for a human being and it all comes down to how you process these emotions. It is your responsibility to help them regulate their emotions correctly and rationally. So, the next time you confront something that your child has done that triggered your anger, remember to remain calm, take a deep breath and talk through the issue with them.
2) Show respect for others and yourself
How did you treat your family, friends, neighbour and even yourself? Your children are learning by observing how you show respect towards others around you. This includes how you talk and the manners that you show towards others. They also learn the value of self-worth through you. Respect yourself and teach them to not settle for anything lesser than you have shown them.
3) Communicate effectively
Do your children talk to you properly or do they scream instead? Do you listen to your children without interrupting? Words can motivate and at the same time, it can hurt. Consider your words properly. On the other hand, give your child your full attention and never belittle their thoughts. The way you communicate to them will all come back to you.
These are just a few behaviours that you can model to your children, but the possibilities are endless. Being the positive role model requires patience, self-control and forethought. Be aware and mindful of your actions and word as these affect your children as well.
